Planning for HMT Southeast Progresses

A meeting was held in Chapel Hill, NC on August 28-29 to plan the first in a series of two workshops in preparation for HMT-Southeast. The first workshop, scheduled for the week of November 17th, will focus primarily on operational gaps in the National Weather Service and some key stakeholders. HMT-SE is slated to begin in FY10, and will be located in the Tar-Neuse River Basins and the surrounding region. The second workshop, to be held sometime in the January-February 2009 time-frame, will focus on the research and development that is needed to address the operational gaps and needs identified in the first workshop. Our host for the August meeting was Ken Galluppi and the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI). RENCI is the tentative site of the first workshop.

On August 27th, Tim Schneider (HMT Project Manager), Glenn Austin (NWS, Office of Climate, Weather and Water Services) and Dennis Miller (NWS, Office of Hydrologic Development) took a tour of the Tar River, beginning in the Neuse basin near Raleigh-Durham and following the Tar down to Washington, NC, where the Tar River passes under a bridge and turns into the Pamlico River. They also checked out a couple of gaging stations along the way.
