Granby, Colorado Soil Moisture Observing Station Upgrades

On September 3, 2010 the NOAA/ESRL Physical Sciences Division (PSD) completed the planned augmentation of the Granby, Colorado soil moisture observing station with instrumentation capable of estimating the surface energy balance and water budget. Measurements of surface sensible, latent, radiative and ground heat flux are now being made. The observations will be used to support research and operational needs for soil moisture and surface flux observations in the Upper Colorado River Basin as part of HMT. Related efforts include the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) and the National Weather Service's Colorado River Basin Forecast Center (CBRFC). This location is in a major high-altitude basin (roughly 8000-9000 ft MSL) that is a crucial part of the headwater region of the Colorado River that helps provide water for millions of people and acres of agriculture.
