HMT-West 2011 Field Season Underway

The 2011 HMT-West field season officially began on December 1st.

The 2011 field season, which runs from December 1st, 2010 through March 15th, 2011 (with a break from 22-27 December), represents a unique deployment due to significant contributions to the existing HMT-West infrastructure from the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Department of Water Resources (CADWR). The CEC is building on the existing HMT-West instrumentation network through CalWater, a program complementary to HMT-West that aims to examine the role of aerosols in precipitation as well as to quantify the temporal and spatial variability of atmospheric rivers (ARs) and their representation in climate models. During a five week period beginning February 1st, there will be additional aircraft and surface-based aerosol monitoring in the HMT-West domain. In addition, through support from the CADWR, a legacy for HMT-West is being implemented. The HMT-West Legacy includes the deployment of snow level radars (four in place for this season), GPSMet and soil moisture sites, new Atmospheric River Observatories (AROs), and enhanced modeling efforts. Another major new focus this year will be a concentrated study of the nature of the Sierra Barrier Jet and its role in modulating precipitation.
