CNRFC Team Visits Medford Weather Forecast Office

Medford, OR sign

Members of the management team at the California Nevada River Forecast Center (CNRFC) visited the Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Medford, Oregon on August 20th and 21st, 2012. Rob Hartman and Alan Haynes of the CNRFC toured the WFO, gave presentations on CNRFC operations to WFO staff, and held informal discussions with office staff on their operations and issues.

During these discussions, it became apparent that forecasters in Medford were not aware of the network of sensors deployed throughout the region by the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) and its partners as part of the HMT-Legacy Project with the California Department of Water Resources. Rob and Alan showed the Medford forecasters where to find these observational data on ESRL's web pages and brought special attention to the Snow-level Radars located at Happy Camp and Shasta Dam and to the GPS Integrated Water Vapor sensors around the area operated by UNAVCO as part of the HMT-Legacy Project. The Medford WFO forecasters were pleased to learn of these observational data and expressed their likely utility in fulfilling their forecast and warning missions.
