NWS–Monterey Forecasters Briefed on Atmospheric River Observatory Data

Dr. Allen White (NOAA/ESRL Physical Sciences Division) visited the Monterey Weather Forecast Office (WFO) on December 15 & 16, to work with forecasters and help them to better interpret and utilize the new Atmospheric River Observatory (ARO) data from nearby Point Sur, CA during a storm occurring at this time. As mentioned in earlier posts, the ARO was put there to help Dave Reynolds (the Meteorologist in Charge) and his team to contend with flash flooding and debris flows in the Big Sur area. Instrumentation at this site provides direct observations of profiles of precipitation (many times unseen with NEXRAD data) and winds, height of the melting level, estimates of moisture flux and thus potential rainfall, and characteristics of the numbers and sizes of rain drops at the surface( potentialy to help calibrate NEXRAD radar-rainfall relationships), as well as other basic meteorological conditions.
