HMT/DTC Coordinate Precipitation Modeling Needs and Performance Evaluations

November 29, 2010

HMT and the Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) held a meeting on 1 November 2010 at the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in Boulder, CO to present progress to date and to discuss next steps for the collaborative HMT-DTC effort, with special emphasis on precipitation forecasting and verification. Meeting participants included scientists from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction's (NCEP) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) and Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC), scientists from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and from NOAA-ESRL's Global Systems Division (GSD) and Physical Sciences Division (PSD). Outcomes of the meeting include: (1) refinement of precipitation-related verification plans for the 2011 winter season; (2) exploration of methods for evaluating model microphysics with the HMT observational datasets; (3) discussion of the relationship between the HMT-DTC collaboration and the core mission of the DTC, (4) the makeup and evaluation of the HMT Ensemble, including activities within the DTC Ensemble Testbed (DET), and (5) prioritization of the goals of the HMT-DTC collaboration. A meeting report will be posted on the HMT Meeting page in the near future.
