HMT Participation at the 5th NOAA Testbeds and Proving Grounds Workshop

May 2, 2014

Several HMT scientists presented oral and poster presentations at the 5th NOAA Testbeds and Proving Grounds Workshop held at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Maryland (April 16-18, 2014).

On Wednesday afternoon, Allen White (NOAA/ESRL) gave the HMT roundup presentation, highlighting the HMT activities that occurred over the past year. Then on Thursday afternoon in the first oral session on Advances in Environmental Prediction, two presentations reported on HMT activities:

  • WRF microphysics validations with HMT observations: Simulations of winter storms impacting the complex terrain of Northern California, presented remotely by Dave Kingsmill (CU/CIRES and NOAA/ESRL)
  • The flash flood and intense rainfall experiment: Lessons learned and future plans, presented by Tom Workoff (SRG, NWS/NCEP/WPC)

Following the oral session was a single poster session, where three posters highlighted HMT activities:

  • The development and testing of a day 4-7 probabilistic winter weather forecast at the Weather Prediction Center, led by Mike Bodner (NWS/NCEP/WPC)
  • Using NOAA Hydrometeorology Testbed soil moisture observations in flood forecasting, led by Bob Zamora (NOAA/ESRL)
  • The Experimental Regional Ensemble Forecast System (ExREF), led by Ligia Bernardet (CU/CIRES and NOAA/ESRL)

In the second oral session on Advances in Environmental Prediction, one presentation reported on HMT activities:

  • Apoplication and extension of the Automated Atmospheric River Detection Tool, presented remotely by Gary Wick (NOAA/ESRL)

On Friday morning, in a session on affiliated programs, Rob Cifelli (NOAA/ESRL) talked about connections between the new NOAA Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Satellite Proving Ground and the Hydrometeorology Testbed Southeast Pilot Study.
